About an experience with the P106-090 mining card

Preface#

This experience may only apply to this mining card, please operate with caution.

Opportunity#

A classmate asked me to help him build a new computer, so within the budget, I could only get the P106-090.

Troubleshooting Process#

Because the official driver for this mining card cannot run properly (isn't that obvious?), I needed to find a modified driver, and then I found this one.

I found the latest version inside.

The next step is to download the driver of the same version.

If you go to NVIDIA's site to download the 10 series driver directly, that's also fine; the effect is the same.

Before downloading the modified driver, you need to confirm whether your mining card supports NVENC, which is video encoding and decoding. For example, the entire P106 series has NVENC cut off, so you need to download a driver that does not start with NVENC.

Next Steps#

Once the driver is downloaded, we need to extract the driver from the exe using 7zip or other extraction software. Then, extract the downloaded latest modified driver into the folder where you just extracted the official NVIDIA driver to replace it. If your computer has already automatically installed the driver via Windows, you will need to use DDU to uninstall the driver. It is recommended to use the clean and shutdown option. Then unplug the network cable. Of course, if your speed is faster than Windows' automatic driver installation, you can click the first button.

Then restart, find the location where you just extracted the driver, and locate setup.exe to install.

During installation, be sure to select custom and check all drivers. Clean installation is optional.

Successful Installation

Open the NVIDIA Control Panel, and we need to change the preferred graphics processor to the high-performance NVIDIA processor. If you are on Windows 10, you can skip the following steps. For Windows 11, we need to open the system in settings, then the display options, find the graphics card, and then find the default graphics settings, selecting your mining card as the default high-performance GPU. At this point, the mining card is set up. Next, you can open something like Sweet Donut to run a test.

Q&A#

Q: What should I do if my driver installation does not show this preferred graphics processor?
No Preferred Graphics Processor
A: Start over from the DDU uninstall driver section.

Q: What should I do if my Minecraft/Sweet Donut crashes due to a low OpenGL version?
A: Solve it according to the video below, and remember to run it as an administrator.

Summary#

The P106-090 is decent for picking up scraps, priced around 50 bucks, which is friendly for scavengers, with performance around that of a 1060. However, this card seems to have lower frame rates in OpenGL games. But it does require some tinkering, ultimately it depends on personal choice.
